The Association of German Engineers defines simulation as following:

Simulation is the emulation of a system with its dynamic processes in a virtual model, to gain knowledge and identify situations that are transferable to the real life model.

The simulation of a process, logistic system, or complete manufacturing system is used when:

• breaking new grounds,
• the limitations of analytical methods have been reached,
• a very complex system has to be visualised,
• experimentation in real life is not possible,
• timing and motion of work in progress needs to be optimised.
