Analysis and current situation.
The company is looked at and analysed as a unit. Products in the company spectrum, machinery, tools and the production area available are compared and analysed.

Area analysis by function:
The type of needed area for a given company, is dependant on the function and company type i.e. is it a manufacturing plant, is the company a service provider hence are only offices needed etc.

  1. In general 5 types of Area are defined:
    • land available,
    • free non utilised area,
    • total surface area of buildings,
    • production area,
    • social and miscellaneous surfaces.

  2. Area dependencies:
After all information has been gathered the definition of the area dependencies can begin. Usually the flow of material is the most important factor that has to be accounted for.

A ideal layout is created in which similar production steps are bundled together.

  3. Area size definition:
It is of utmost importance to establish a precise estimate of the production area that is needed. The failure or underestimation in this case could have serious negative economic consequences. In turn an overestimation of the needed surface results in production area that is wasted.

  4. Intensity of area dependencies:
The final layout and positioning of a production area or module relies on their dependencies and amount of ‘’transport’’ that takes place, be it flow of material or, in the case of an office, the flow of information.
